Certified Peer Specialist Supervisor


The Certified Peer Specialist Supervisor (CPSS) provides leadership, supervision and support to Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) staff. This role is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of peer support services, ensuring compliance within a Medicaid-billable framework and fostering a positive, recovery-oriented work environment. The CPSS supports staff in engaging individuals who meet criteria for peer support services, will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, navigator and motivator to peer staff and at times, individuals in or seeking recovery to promote person-centered recovery planning and goal realizations. This will include harm reduction strategies from substance use to promote long-term recovery. The CPSS must demonstrate an ability to manage all aspects of peer programming, including staff and programming scheduling, one-on-one and group supervision, partner relationships and development of new programming as needed. The CPSS should leverage lived experiences as appropriate to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships and understand and respect everyone's unique path to recovery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervisory and Leadership

  • Provides day-to-day operational oversight of the work of certified peer specialists ensuring they are providing high quality, recovery-oriented goal-directed services. 

  • Provide weekly supervision and direct support within a Fee for Service environment ensuring that clinical documentation is completed in accordance with licensing and managed care standards, agency policies and procedures, and PCB certification standards.

  • Foster a culture of recovery and empowerment while ensuring that peer specialists adhere to program goals and support the mission of Project HOME. Advocate for recovery resources and provide coaching to help residents develop self-help skills and achieve their goals by making informed, independent choices.

  • Provide direct leadership to the team and act as a liaison when needed to bridge any participant issues and concerns.

Peer Support and Development

  • Facilitate professional growth through supervision and by assisting peers to focus on skill building and acquisition through hands on support and training.

  • Assist peers in managing and resolving issues with an emphasis on ethical problem solving.

  • Provide advocacy and mentoring to peers, participants and others identified as recovery supports to participants.

Administrative Duties

  • Complete required administrative tasks related to Fee-for Service documentation, and other tasks related to the peer support program.

  • Ensure scheduling is up to date and maintained weekly to ensure coverage and fee for service hours are met for billing purposes.

  • Maintain and ensure training records are up to date and credentialing requirements are met for peer staff.

Education and Experience Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Experience:

  • Have a bachelor's degree in sociology, social work, psychology, gerontology, anthropology, political science, history, criminal justice, theology, counseling, education or a related field from an accredited program recognized by the USDOE or the CHEA, or an equivalent degree from a foreign college or university approved by the USDOE; and two years of mental health direct service experience that may include Peer Support Services (PSS);and has completed the CPS supervisory training curriculum approved by the Department within 90 days of hire; or

  • Have an associate degree in the above stated areas with three years 'direct care mental health experience which can include peer support services(PSS);and has completed the CPS supervisory training curriculum approved by the by Department within 90 days of hire; or

  • Have a high school diploma or GED and four years mental health direct care service experience that may include but not limited to PSS and crisis services; and have completed the CPS supervisory training curriculum approved by Department within 90 days of hire.

  • Peer Specialist Supervisor Certification (within 90 days of hire) and one years' experience managing a peer support team.

  • Knowledgeable in Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Disabilities.

  • Valid Pennsylvania driver's license required.

Preferred Experience:

  • Managing within a Fee for Service Program

  • Certified Peer Specialist Certification

  • Proficient experience with an electronic health records system 


Core Skills:

  • Exceptional organizational skills and record-keeping; Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing. Excellent computer skills for documenting in an electronic health record.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with all levels of staff and external stakeholders.

Physical requirements:

work that primarily involves sitting/standing/traveling in the community.
