Summer Assistant Teacher - K-8



Job Summary

Assists and provides classroom support during the K-8 summer camp and supervision of children during summer camp trips.  Supports student learning and engagement in academic and life skills enrichment in a state-of-the-art, high-quality center.

Summer camp schedule is full-time, Monday - Friday, for six weeks throughout July and August.  Orientation is scheduled for late June.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and nurture a welcoming, supportive and cooperative relationship with children, parents and staff.
  • Assist Lead Teacher in daily implementation of lesson plans and classroom activities, including working with children one-on-one or in small groups.
  • Plan and/or implement lessons and activities in the Lead Teacher's absence.
  •  Assist Lead Teacher with the maintenance of an orderly classroom.
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up of mealtimes and water play activities..
  • Supervise students on field trips.
  • Participate in required staff meetings.

Education and Experience Minimum Requirements

Minimum Experience

  • High school diploma with at least two years of childcare experience (can include volunteering and tutoring)
  • Awareness of developmental needs of elementary school students
  • Good communication skills

Preferred Experience

  • College credits or an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education, Human Services or other related fields with at least 1 year of childcare experience
  • Experience planning lessons and activities for elementary aged students

Core Skills:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks well.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with staff, students, and parents.  Stays calm under pressure.

Physical requirements

Active work involved in the care of children.  includes walking, climbing stairs, kneeling, and driving.
